Chitwan Chepang Hill Trail

Chitwan Chepang Hill TrailThe Chitwan Chepang hill Trail, offers a rare combination of cultural and sightseeing experience in your lifetime. One of the most interesting aspects of the trekking is getting a glimpse of the Chepangs and other local communities who live in this mid-hill area of country. Accepting the invitation of the villagers to stay in their beautiful house as paying guests and sharing their meals is a journey of innovation in itself. The unique cultures in this region in addition to natural attractions add to the charm of the experience. The Chitwan Chepang hill trail start from Hugdi, between Mugling and Krishna bhir in Dhading district about 80 km from Kathmandu, and ends in Shaktikhor. If one starting from Chitwan national park the trail can also be started from Shaktikhor ending at Hugdi.

Hattibang, a main stop on the way, offers good scenery of the surrounding mountains and trekking through pristine mid-hill forests. Here one can experience Magar, Chepang and Giripuri cultures at the community run home stay and community based guest house.

Siraichuli (1945m) one of the highest hills of Mahabharat range, offers spectacular views of the mountains and magnificent sunrise as well as sunset views. The view includes a wide range of Himalayan peaks such as Mt. Rolwaling,Mt. Gaurishanker, Langtang,Gorkha Himal, Peak 29, Himalchuli, Manaslu, Annpurna range, Dhaulagiri and the Chitwan national park in the Terai areas. The trekking to Siraichuli from Hattibang is challenging through rough landscape and vegetation. Jyandala village on the trail is a Chepang settlement where visitors can have a cultural experience. A tour of the village and accommodation at village home stay is recommended. Next is Chisapanitar, which is a famous bird watching site. More than 250 varieties of bird species are found in this trail.

Another interesting place is Upparadang Gadi which used to be the headquarters of Chitwan till early 1962. The remains of historic fort that defend the surrounding countryside are still here. The fort which sits at 1,275m is said to have been built by Shatru Bhanjan Shah, oldest son of Bahadur Shah. The area also offers spectacular views.
